Timing Chain Tensioner: Service and Repair
Timing Chain Tensioner ReplacementRemoval Procedure
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the 2 engine cover fasteners.
3. Remove the 2 engine cover plastic retainers.
4. Remove the engine cover (1) from the engine.
5. Remove the ignition coils (1, 2, 3, 4).
6. Remove the spark plugs.
7. Rotate the engine to top dead center on the number one cylinder.
8. Remove the two timing chain tensioner bolts (1, 2).
9. Remove the timing chain tensioner.
Installation Procedure
1. Release the ratchet pawl.
2. Fully depress the plunger (4).
Apply the hook (2) to the pin (3).
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
3. Install the timing chain tensioner into the timing chain cover. Secure the timing chain tensioner using two bolts (1).
^ Tighten the timing chain tensioner bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
4. Rotate the engine approximately one revolution in order to release the plunger on the timing chain tensioner.
5. Install the spark plugs.
^ Tighten the spark plugs to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.).
6. Install the ignition coils (1, 2, 3, 4).
7. Position the engine cover on the engine (1).
8. Install the 2 engine cover plastic retainers.
9. Install the 2 engine cover fasteners.
10. Connect the negative battery cable.
^ Tighten the battery cable bolt to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.).
