Muffler: Service and Repair

Muffler Replacement (3.6L, 3.9L)

Removal Procedure




1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
2. If equipped, remove the frame brace. Refer to Frame Brace Replacement .
3. Remove the exhaust pipe to muffler nuts.




4. With the aid of an assistant, separate the muffler insulators from the hangers, if equipped with a 3.9L engine.
5. Remove the muffler assembly.




6. With the aid of an assistant, separate the muffler insulators from the hangers, if equipped with a 3.6L engine.
7. Remove the muffler assembly.

Installation Procedure

Important: Replace the muffler hangers any time the exhaust system is removed from the vehicle. Do not use any mineral oil based lubricants or sharp tools when installing new exhaust system hangers.




1. With the aid of an assistant, position the muffler assembly, if equipped with a 3.6L engine.
2. Install the muffler insulators to the hangers.




3. With the aid of an assistant, position the muffler assembly, if equipped with a 3.9L engine.
4. Install the muffler insulators to the hangers.





Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice .

5. Install the exhaust pipe to muffler nuts.

Tighten the nuts to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).

6. If equipped, install the frame brace. Refer to Frame Brace Replacement .
7. Lower the vehicle.
