Hood Latch Release Cable Replacement

Tools Required

J 38778 Door Trim Pad and Garnish Clip Remover

Removal Procedure




1. Open the hood.
2. Remove the left front headlamp.

Important: Block the hood latch in order to prevent the hood from locking until you have installed the hood latch release cable.

3. Remove the hood latch.
Squeeze the cable retainer to remove the release from the hood latch.
4. Remove the front sheet metal diagonal brace.
5. Remove the air cleaner.
6. Tie a wire or string to the end of the hood release cable. Ensure that the end of the wire or string remains in the engine compartment.




7. Remove the hood release cable retainers from the engine compartment side rail.
8. Remove the left front carpet retainer.
9. Pull the carpet back to access the hood release.




10. Remove the hood release cable from the hood release handle.
11. Squeeze the tabs on the cable retainer to remove the cable assembly from the hood release handle assembly.




12. Use a small flat-bladed tool to remove the grommet from the dash panel.
13. Remove the hood latch release cable from the dash panel and vehicle.

Installation Procedure




1. Tie the hood latch release cable to a wire or string. Route the hood latch release cable grommet through the dash panel.
2. Apply strip caulk sealer or equivalent around the grommet.
3. Install the hood latch release cable to the hood release handle.
4. Install the cable assembly into the hood release handle assembly until you hear the tabs click.
5. Pull the carpet back.
6. Install the front left carpet retainer.




7. Install the hood latch release cable retainers to the engine compartment side rail retainers.
8. Route the hood latch release cable through the radiator support.
9. Install the air cleaner.
10. Install the front sheet metal diagonal brace.




11. Install the release cable to the hood latch.
12. Install the hood latch.
13. Install the left front headlamp.
14. Remove the block from the latch mechanism.
15. Inspect the hood latch for proper operation.
16. Close the hood.
