Front Disc Brake Hardware Replacement

Removal Procedure




1. Remove the following components.
^ The caliper bolts
^ The inside pad wear indicator (3)
^ The outside pad wear indicator (5), if equipped
^ The 2 brake pad retainers (4, 9)
^ The insulators (1, 7)
^ The pad insulators (2, 8)




2. Remove the slide pins (17, 21) from the caliper bracket (14).




3. Use a dull chisel and a hammer in order to remove the slide pin boots (2) from the caliper bracket.
Discard the slide pin boots.

Inspection Procedure




1. Clean the 2 brake pad retainers (4, 9). Inspect the retainers for the following conditions:
^ Sufficient rebound
^ No deformation
^ No cracks
^ No wear
^ No rust
^ No dirt
If the retainers meet the above conditions, re-use the retainers.
2. Inspect the caliper bracket for corrosion and wear. Replace the bracket if the bracket is damaged.
3. Inspect the caliper housing for corrosion and wear. Replace the caliper if the caliper housing is damaged.

Installation Procedure




1. Lubricate 2 NEW slide pin boots (15, 20) with lithium soap base glycol grease or Silicone Brake Lubricant, GM P/N 89021536, AC Delco P/N 89021537 (Canadian P/N 89021538), or equivalent.
2. Use a 19 mm socket and a hammer in order to install the boots to the caliper bracket (14). Verify the boots are firmly seated on the caliper bracket.
3. Lubricate the sliding pins (17, 21) with lithium soap base glycol grease or Silicone Brake Lubricant, GM P/N 89021536, AC Delco P/N 89021537 (Canadian P/N 89021538), or equivalent.
4. Install the sliding pins to the caliper bracket.




5. Install the upper brake pad retainer (4) to the caliper bracket.
6. Install the lower brake pad retainer (9) to the caliper bracket.
7. Install the inner wear indicator (3) to the inner pad (10).
8. Install the outer wear indicator (5), if equipped, to the outer pad (6).
9. Apply disc brake grease to both sides of the inner pad insulator (2).
10. Install the inner pad insulator to the inner pad.
11. Install the inner insulator (1) to the inner pad insulator.
12. Apply disc brake grease to both sides of the outer pad insulator (8).
13. Install the outer pad insulator to the outer pad.
14. Install the outer insulator (7) to the outer pad insulator.
15. Install the brake pads.
