TECHNICALBulletin No.: 09-07-31-002
Date: May 18, 2009
Subject: Clutch May Not Release When Depressing Clutch Pedal During Freezing Temperatures (Install Water Deflector Shield)
Models:
2006-2009 Pontiac Solstice
2007-2009 Saturn SKY
2006-2009 Opel GT
Equipped with a Five-Speed Manual Transmission
Condition
A customer or dealer technician may comment that after a snow storm, then a thaw followed by freezing ambient temperatures, or a heavy rain storm followed by freezing weather, the clutch may not release when depressing the clutch pedal. The condition is most noticeable when starting the vehicle or trying to shift into gear.
Cause
This condition may be caused by moisture has entering the clutch housing area and causing the clutch plate to freeze to the flywheel.
Correction
Important
DO NOT replace the clutch or flywheel assembly for this condition.
1. Verify that the clutch will not release.
2. Run the engine with the transmission out of gear for a few minutes. This will generate enough heat to free up the clutch.
3. When the clutch begins to operate, drive the vehicle at slow speeds and slightly slip the clutch to clean any residue from the clutch surface. This should generate enough heat to evaporate any residual moisture.
4. Remove the air inlet grille panel. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement in SI in order to install water deflector shield, GM P/N 25875802.
5. Attach the water deflector shield, GM P/N 25875802, to the air inlet grille panel bracket rod using two plastic tie straps (obtain locally). The shield is attached to the rod in two locations (1). The wiper arm should not contact the water deflector shield (2).
6. Install the air inlet grille panel. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement in SI.
