Diagnostic Fault Information
Circuit/System Description
The steering angle sensor shares a 12-volt ignition supply voltage with the electronic brake control module (EBCM) and the yaw-rate/lateral sensor. The EBCM applies a ground to the steering angle sensor low reference circuit, which is shared with the yaw-rate/lateral sensor.
The steering angle sensor provides a serial data signal output to the EBCM that represents the steering wheel degree of rotation. The EBCM utilizes this signal to calculate the driver intended driving direction.
Conditions for Running the DTC
* The ignition is ON.
* Ignition voltage is greater than 9.5 volts.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
* Steering angle sensor is reporting an internal electronic failure.
* Steering angle sensor has not been initialized.
* Steering angle sensor offset is greater than 15 degrees.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
* Vehicle stability enhancement system (VSES) are disabled.
* A DIC message and/or a warning message may be displayed.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
* The condition for the DTC is no longer present and the DTC is cleared with a scan tool.
* The EBCM automatically clears the history DTC when a current DTC is not detected in 100 consecutive drive cycles.
Diagnostic Aids
* If DTC C0292 is set, diagnose that DTC first.
* A poor ground connection for the EBCM may cause this DTC to set.

Circuit/System Verification
1. Position the steering wheel to the straight-ahead, centered, position.
2. Install a scan tool, ignition ON, engine OFF, and view SWPS signal. One of the signals should be approximately 0-720 degrees.
3. As the steering wheel is turned, each signal should travel smoothly between 0 and 720 degrees.
Circuit/System Testing
1. Verify that DTC C0186 or C0196 is not set
• If DTC C0186 or C0196 is set, refer to DTC C0186 (C0186) or DTC C0196 (C0196)
2. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the EBCM.
3. Ignition ON, test for less than 1 volt between the circuit terminal of the appropriate circuit and ground.
* Reference voltage circuit terminal 5
* Reference ground circuit terminal 40
* Serial Data circuit terminals 18 and 19
• If greater than the specified range, test the appropriate circuit for a short to voltage.
4. Ignition OFF, test for infinite resistance between the ignition voltage terminal of the appropriate sensor listed below and ground.
* Reference voltage circuit terminal 5
* Reference ground circuit terminal 40
* Serial Data circuit terminals 18 and 19
• If less than the specified value, test the appropriate circuit for a short to ground.
5. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the Steering Angle Sensor.
6. Ignition OFF, test for less than 2 ohms between the appropriate circuit terminals listed below.
* Reference voltage circuit terminal 5 at the EBCM harness connector and terminal 1 at the Steering Angle Sensor harness connector.
* Reference ground circuit terminal 40 at the EBCM harness connector and terminal 6 at the Steering Angle Sensor harness connector.
* Communication circuit terminal 18 at the EBCM harness connector and terminal 3 at the Steering Angle Sensor harness connector.
* Communication circuit terminal 19 at the EBCM harness connector and terminal 4 at the Steering Angle Sensor harness connector.
• If greater than the specified value, test the ignition voltage circuit for an open or high resistance.
7. If all circuits test normal, replace the Steering Angle Sensor. If the DTC resets replace the EBCM.
Repair Instructions
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification (Verification Tests) after completing the diagnostic procedure.
* Steering Angle Sensor Centering (Procedures)
* Control Module References (Programming and Relearning) for EBCM replacement, setup, and programming
