Wiper/Washer System
Wiper/Washer System Description and Operation
Windshield Wiper System
The windshield wiper system consists of a wiper motor, a linkage, a wiper arm and blade, and a wiper/washer switch. The windshield wiper circuit incorporates a self parking device which consists of a worm gear and a cam plate in order to keep the circuit complete temporarily when the switch is turned OFF. The wiper system is driven by a permanent magnet-type motor. The windshield wiper motor is mounted on the dash panel and is directly connected to the windshield wiper linkage.
Intermittent, park, and washer wipers are all low speed wiper motor functions controlled through the wiper relay integrated in the IP fuse block. During intermittent and wash operation the switch signals are inputs to the multifunction module integrated in the IP fuse block. The multifunction module controls the wiper relay through a low side drive control circuit and whenever the relay is energized ignition voltage will be supplied from the relay through the windshield wiper switch to the wiper motor low speed circuit. The wiper motor park switch is integrated in the wiper motor and is closed whenever the motor is out of the park position. Ignition voltage is supplied to the park switch and while the switch is closed the voltage will be supplied to the wiper relay through the park control circuit. Whenever the wiper relay is in the de-energized state, ignition voltage from the park control circuit will be supplied from the relay through the windshield wiper switch to the wiper motor low speed circuit until the park switch opens.
The windshield wiper motor has two speeds, LO and HI, and intermittent wiper capability. The wiper switch is an integral part of the wiper/washer switch. Windshield wiper operation is actuated through the lever on the right side of the steering column. Battery voltage is supplied through the control circuits to the motor.
Windshield Washer System
The windshield washer system is equipped with a washer fluid reservoir, a washer fluid pump, hoses, nozzles, and a wiper/washer switch. The windshield washer reservoir is mounted behind the front left wheel well splash shield. Attached to the reservoir is a washer pump, which pumps fluid through the hoses to the two nozzles mounted on the hood. The washer switch is an integral part of the wiper/washer switch. Windshield washer operation is actuated through the lever on the right side of the steering column. Ignition voltage is supplied to the washer pump through the wiper switch.
