Muffler: Service and Repair
Exhaust Muffler Replacement (2.4L, 3.5L, and 3.9L)
Removal Procedure
1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
2. If equipped, remove the frame brace. Refer to Frame Brace Replacement Frame Brace Replacement.
3. If equipped with a 2.4L engine, remove the exhaust manifold pipe to muffler nuts.
4. If equipped with a 3.5L, or a 3.9L engine with a automatic transaxle, remove the right (rear) catalytic converter to muffler nuts.
5. With the aid of an assistant, remove the muffler insulators from the hangers.
6. Remove the muffler assembly.
Installation Procedure
Note: Replace the muffler hangers any time the exhaust system is removed from the vehicle. Do not use any mineral oil based lubricants or sharp tools when installing new exhaust system hangers.
1. With the aid of an assistant, position the muffler assembly.
2. Install the muffler insulators to the hangers.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.
3. If equipped with a 3.5L, or a 3.9L engine with a automatic transaxle, install the right (rear) catalytic converter to muffler nuts.
Tighten the nuts to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
4. If equipped with a 2.4L engine, install the exhaust manifold pipe to muffler nuts.
Tighten the nuts to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
5. If equipped, install the frame brace. Refer to Frame Brace Replacement Frame Brace Replacement.
6. Lower the vehicle.
