The expiration date for this Service Update has been revised. It will expire at the end of the applicable Transmission Control Module Warranty Period. Please discard all copies of bulletin 10048, issued May 2010.

This service update includes vehicles in dealer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealership for any reason. It will expire at the end of the involved vehicle's applicable Transmission Control Module Warranty period.

Purpose

This bulletin provides a service procedure to reprogram the TCM on certain 2010 model year Buick Lucerne, Chevrolet Impala and Malibu, and Pontiac G6 vehicles equipped with a 3.5L/3.9L engine (LGD/LZE/LZ4/LZ9) and a 4T45/4T65 transmission (M15/MN5. These vehicles will not clear TCM 'I/M Test DTCs' that are stored, even after the problem has been repaired.

I/M Test DTCs are different than traditional DTCs and are used as part of certain State/Province vehicle emission test programs. I/M Test DTCs cannot be cleared by a scan tool and will only clear when the diagnostic that stored the DTC has confirmed that the problem has been repaired. Stored I/M Test DTCs discovered during a vehicle emission test may cause a vehicle to fail or be rejected from the test.

This service procedure should be completed as soon as possible on involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealer for any type of service during the applicable Transmission Control Module Warranty period.

Vehicles Involved

A list of involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory is available on the "Service Update Bulletin Information" link under the "Service" tab in GM GlobalConnect. Customer vehicles that return for service, for any reason, and are still covered under the vehicle's Transmission Control Module Warranty, and are within the VIN breakpoints provided below, should be checked for vehicle eligibility in the appropriate system listed below.

Important
Dealers are to confirm vehicle eligibility prior to beginning repairs by using GMVIS (dealers using WINS) or the Investigate Vehicle History link (dealers using GWM). Not all vehicles within the above breakpoints may be involved.

Parts Information

No parts are required for this service update.

Service Procedure

Do not attempt to order the calibration number from GM Customer Care and Aftersales. The calibration numbers required for this service procedure are programmed into control modules via a Multiple Diagnostic Interface (MDI) and TIS2WEB with the calibration update. When using a MDI for reprogramming, ensure that it is updated with the latest software version. Use TIS2WEB on or after 05/10/10 to obtain the calibration. If you cannot access the calibration, call the Techline Customer Support Center and it will be provided.

For step-by-step programming instructions, please refer to SI and the Techline Information System (TIS) terminal.

1. Verify that there is a battery charge of 12 to 15 volts. The battery must be able to maintain a charge during programming. Only use an approved Midtronics(R) PSC 550 Battery Maintainer (SPS Programming Support Tool EL-49642) or equivalent to maintain proper battery voltage during programming.

2. Reprogram the transmission control module (TCM). Refer to SI and Service Programming System (SPS) documentation for programming instructions, if required.

1. Connect the MDI to the vehicle.

2. Select J2534 MDI and Reprogram ECU from the Select Diagnostic Tool and Programming Process screen.

3. Select TCM Transmission Control Module -- Programming from the Supported Controllers screen.

4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

3. Using the MDI, and either GDS or Tech 2, clear all DTCs if required.
