Balance Shaft Installation
1. Install the balance shafts.
Note: Confirm that the matchmarks (3) on the driven gears are matched.
2. Rotate the driven gear of the balance shaft in the rotating direction until it hits the stopper.
3. Confirm that the timing marks on the balance shafts (3) are aligned.
4. Align the timing marks (3) on the balance shafts as shown in the illustration.
5. Place the balance shafts onto the crankcase.
6. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the threads and under the heads of the bolts.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).
7. Using several steps, uniformly install and tighten the 8 bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.
Tighten the bearing cap bolts to 22 Nm (16 lb ft).
8. Mark the front of the bolts with paint (1).
9. Further tighten the bolts by 90 degrees (a) as shown in the illustration.
10. Check that the paint mark is now at a 90-degree angle to the front.
