Lower Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Steering Column in Lock Position Caution (Steering Column in Lock Position Caution).

1. LOCK the steering column and verify the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.




2. Turn back the floor carpet and remove the 2 clips (2, 3) and the column hole cover silencer sheet (1).




3. Put match marks (1) on the intermediate shaft and on the lower intermediate shaft.
4. Remove the bolt.
5. Separate the intermediate shaft from the lower intermediate shaft.




6. Remove the clips (1, 2, 3).
7. Disengage the clip (4).
8. Separate the steering column hole cover from the body.
9. Lower the front suspension crossmember as much as necessary in order to access the lower intermediate shaft. Refer to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement (All Wheel Drive) (Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement)Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement (Two Wheel Drive) (Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement).




10. Remove the steering column hole cover (1).




11. Put match marks (1) on the lower intermediate shaft and on the steering gear pinion shaft.
12. Remove the bolt and the lower intermediate shaft.

Installation Procedure




1. Align the match marks (1) and install the lower intermediate shaft to the steering gear pinion shaft.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

2. Install the bolt. Tighten the bolt to 35 Nm (26 lb ft).




3. Align the hole in the steering column hole cover (1) with the protrusion on the steering gear. Install the cover to the steering gear.
4. Install the front suspension crossmember. Refer to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement (All Wheel Drive) (Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement)Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement (Two Wheel Drive) (Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement).




5. Install the steering column hole cover to the body.
6. Install the clip (4).
7. Install the clips (1, 2, 3).




8. Align the match marks (1) on the intermediate shaft and on the lower intermediate shaft.
9. Install the lower intermediate shaft to the intermediate shaft with the bolt. Tighten the bolt to 35 Nm (26 lb ft).




10. Install the column hole cover silencer sheet (1) with the 2 clips (2, 3).
11. Install the floor carpet.
