Transmission Replacement

Removal Procedure




1. Disconnect the washer hose clamps (1) and washer hose (2).




2. Remove the bolts (1) and hood sub-assembly.
3. Remove the air inlet grill panel. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Service and Repair).
4. Align the front wheels facing straight ahead.
5. Remove the front wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
6. Remove the engine splash shields. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Left Side (Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Left Side) , Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side (Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side).
7. Drain the manual transaxle oil.
8. Remove the engine cover assembly. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement (Service and Repair).
9. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
10. Remove the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement (Removal and Replacement).
11. Remove the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement (Service and Repair).




12. Remove the clips and disconnect the transmission shift lever cables from the control cable bracket (1).
13. Remove the clips and disconnect the transmission cables from the transaxle (2).
14. Remove the clutch release cylinder assembly.




15. Disconnect the back-up light switch connector (1) and wire harness clamp and wire harness.
16. Remove the front suspension crossmember. Refer to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement (All Wheel Drive) (Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement)Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement (Two Wheel Drive) (Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement).
17. Remove the front engine mounting insulator.
18. Remove the starter assembly. Refer to Starter Replacement (2.4L) (Service and Repair)Starter Replacement (1.8L) (Service and Repair).




19. Remove the nut (1), and disconnect the wire harness clamp and wire harness.




20. Support the manual transaxle with a transmission jack.




21. Remove the bolt (1) and wire harness clamp bracket.




22. Remove the through bolt (2) and nut, then separate the engine mounting insulator sub-assembly LH.





Note: Take care so that the rear side of the engine assembly does not come into contact with the body.

23. Tilt the manual transaxle downward.




24. Remove the bolts (1-3) and the engine mounting bracket LH.




25. Remove the bolts (1-6).




26. Remove the bolts (1-4) and the manual transaxle.




27. Remove the bolts (1, 2) and the front engine mounting bracket.
28. Remove the rear engine mounting insulator.




29. Remove the bolts (1-3) and the rear engine mounting bracket.




30. Remove the bolts (1, 2) and the manual transmission case protector.




31. Remove the bolt (1) and wire harness clamp bracket.

Installation Procedure





Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution)

1. Install the wire harness clamp bracket with the bolt (1) and tighten to 26 Nm (19 lb ft).




2. Install the manual transmission case protector with the bolts (1, 2) and tighten to 18 Nm (13 lb ft).




3. Install the rear engine mounting bracket with the bolts (1-3) and tighten to 45 Nm (33 lb ft).
4. Install the rear engine mounting insulator.




5. Install the front engine mounting bracket with the bolts (1, 2) and tighten to 64 Nm (47 lb ft).
6. Align the input shaft with the clutch disc and install the manual transaxle onto the engine.





Note: Insert dowel pins into the dowel holes securely so that the end face of the transaxle assembly fits close against the engine assembly before tightening the bolts.

7. Install the bolts (1-4) and tighten.

* Bolt (1) to 64 Nm (47 lb ft)
* Bolts (2) to 64 Nm (47 lb ft)
* Bolts (3) to 46 Nm (34 lb ft)
* Bolt (4) to 46 Nm (34 lb ft)




8. Install the bolts (1-4) and tighten to 44 Nm (32 lb ft).




9. Hand tighten the engine mounting bracket LH bolts.
10. Tighten the bolts (1-3) to 52 Nm (38 lb ft).




11. Install the engine mounting insulator sub-assembly LH with the through bolt (2) and nut and tighten to 56 Nm (41 lb ft).




12. Install the wire harness clamp with the bolt (1) and tighten to 13 Nm (9 lb ft).




13. Install the wire harness with the bolt (1) and tighten to 13 Nm (9 lb ft).
14. Connect the wire harness to the wire harness clamp.
15. Install the starter assembly. Refer to Starter Replacement (2.4L) (Service and Repair)Starter Replacement (1.8L) (Service and Repair)
16. Install the front engine mounting insulator.
17. Install the front suspension crossmember assembly. Refer to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement (All Wheel Drive) (Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement)Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement (Two Wheel Drive) (Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement)




18. Connect the wire harness to the wire harness clamp.
19. Connect the back-up light switch connector (1).
20. Install the clutch release cylinder assembly.




21. Install the transmission shift lever cables to the control cable bracket with new clips (1).
22. Install the transmission cables to the transaxle with the clips (2).
23. Install the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement (Service and Repair).
24. Install the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement (Removal and Replacement).
25. Install the air cleaner assembly.
26. Install the air inlet grill panel. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Service and Repair).




27. Install the hood assembly with the bolts (1) and tighten to 13 Nm (10 lb ft).




28. Install the washer hose (2) and washer hose clamps.
29. Bleed the clutch line.
30. Add transaxle oil.
31. Inspect and adjust the transaxle oil.
32. Install the engine splash shields. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Left Side (Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Left Side) , Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side (Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side).
33. Install the front wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
34. Adjust the front wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement (Wheel Alignment Measurement).
35. Install the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement (Service and Repair).
