Rear Cross-Member: Service and Repair
Rear Suspension Support Crossmember Replacement (Two Wheel Drive)
Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Service and Repair).
Note: If you are removing the rear suspension crossmember in order to gain access to other components, you may remove the following components together as a rear drive module:
* The rear suspension crossmember
* The upper control arms
* The lower control arms
* The stabilizer shaft
* The disc brakes
* The rear park brake cables
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
3. Remove the exhaust muffler. Refer to Exhaust Muffler Replacement (2.4L AWD) (Service and Repair)Exhaust Muffler Replacement (2.4L FWD) (Service and Repair)Exhaust Muffler Replacement (1.8L) (Service and Repair).
4. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement (2.4L AWD) (Service and Repair)Catalytic Converter Replacement (2.4L FWD) (Service and Repair)Catalytic Converter Replacement (1.8L) (Service and Repair).
5. Remove the 2 rear tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
6. Remove the rear brake calipers. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Rear Brake Caliper Replacement)Rear Brake Caliper Replacement (Except All Wheel Drive and GT) (Rear Brake Caliper Replacement).
7. Remove the rear brake rotors. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (Rear Brake Rotor Replacement).
8. Remove the 2 rear wheel speed sensors and pigtails. Refer to Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (FWD) (Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement)Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (AWD) (Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement).
9. Remove the park brake assembly. Refer to Park Brake Hardware Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Service and Repair).
10. Remove the front park brake cable. Refer to Parking Brake Front Cable Replacement (Parking Brake Front Cable Replacement).
11. Remove the rear park brake cables from the equalizer. Refer to Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement (All Wheel Drive) (Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement)Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement (GT) (Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement)Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement (Except All Wheel Drive and GT) (Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement).
12. Use containers in order to catch the brake fluid.
13. Remove the rear stabilizer link assembly. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Rear Suspension).
14. Remove the lower control arms. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Lower Control Arm Replacement).
15. Remove the upper control arms. Refer to Upper Control Arm Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Upper Control Arm Replacement).
16. Remove the rear hub and bearing assembly. Refer to Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement (All Wheel Drive) (Service and Repair)Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement (GT) (Service and Repair)Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement (Except All Wheel Drive and GT) (Service and Repair).
17. Remove the rear shock absorbers with the coil springs. Refer to Shock Absorber Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Rear Suspension Shock Absorber)Shock Absorber Replacement (Except All Wheel Drive and GT) (Rear Suspension Shock Absorber).
18. Support the rear suspension support crossmember, by using a jack and a block of wood.
19. Remove the evaporative emission canister. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Replacement (Service and Repair) or Evaporative Emission Canister Replacement (Service and Repair).
20. Remove the two bolts (1) (2).
21. Remove the two nuts (3) (4).
22. Lower the rear suspension support crossmember.
23. Remove the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Rear Suspension)Stabilizer Shaft Replacement (Except All Wheel Drive and GT) (Rear Suspension).
24. Remove the two stud bolts (1).
Installation Procedure
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution)
1. Install the two stud bolts (1) and tighten to 17 Nm (13 lb ft).
2. Install the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Rear Suspension)Stabilizer Shaft Replacement (Except All Wheel Drive and GT) (Rear Suspension).
3. Raise and install the rear suspension support crossmember using a jack and a block of wood.
4. Install the 2 nuts (3, 4) and the 2 bolts (1, 2) in order to retain the crossmember to the body. Tighten the nuts and the bolts to 105 Nm (77.4 lb ft).
5. Install the evaporative emission canister. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Replacement (Service and Repair) or Evaporative Emission Canister Replacement (Service and Repair).
Note: Do not tighten the nuts or the bolts on the suspension components. The weight of the vehicle must be on the tire and wheel assemblies before tightening the nuts and the bolts.
6. Install the rear shock absorbers with the coil springs and temporarily tighten. Refer to Shock Absorber Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Rear Suspension Shock Absorber)Shock Absorber Replacement (Except All Wheel Drive and GT) (Rear Suspension Shock Absorber).
7. Install the rear hub and bearing assembly. Refer to Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement (All Wheel Drive) (Service and Repair)Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement (GT) (Service and Repair)Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement (Except All Wheel Drive and GT) (Service and Repair).
8. If you are replacing a control arm, copy the match marks from the old components to the new components.
9. Install the upper control arms, and temporarily tighten. Refer to Upper Control Arm Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Upper Control Arm Replacement).
10. Install the lower control arms, and temporarily tighten. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Lower Control Arm Replacement).
11. Install the stabilizer shaft link. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Rear Suspension).
12. Install the park brake assembly. Refer to Park Brake Hardware Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Service and Repair).
13. Install the front park brake cable. Refer to Parking Brake Front Cable Replacement (Parking Brake Front Cable Replacement).
14. Install the rear park brake cables. Refer to Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement (All Wheel Drive) (Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement)Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement (GT) (Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement)Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement (Except All Wheel Drive and GT) (Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement).
15. Install the 2 rear wheel speed sensors and pigtails. Refer to Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (FWD) (Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement)Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (AWD) (Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement).
16. Install the rear brake rotors. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (Rear Brake Rotor Replacement).
17. Install the rear brake calipers. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Rear Brake Caliper Replacement)Rear Brake Caliper Replacement (Except All Wheel Drive and GT) (Rear Brake Caliper Replacement).
18. Install the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement (2.4L AWD) (Service and Repair)Catalytic Converter Replacement (2.4L FWD) (Service and Repair)Catalytic Converter Replacement (1.8L) (Service and Repair).
19. Install the exhaust muffler. Refer to Exhaust Muffler Replacement (2.4L AWD) (Service and Repair)Exhaust Muffler Replacement (2.4L FWD) (Service and Repair)Exhaust Muffler Replacement (1.8L) (Service and Repair).
20. Install the 2 rear tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
21. Lower the vehicle.
22. Install the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Service and Repair).
23. Bounce the rear of the vehicle in order to stabilize the suspension.
24. Fully tighten the rear upper control arms. Refer to Upper Control Arm Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Upper Control Arm Replacement).
25. Fully tighten the rear lower control arms. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Lower Control Arm Replacement).
26. Fully tighten the rear shock absorbers with springs. Refer to Shock Absorber Replacement (All Wheel Drive and GT) (Rear Suspension Shock Absorber)Shock Absorber Replacement (Except All Wheel Drive and GT) (Rear Suspension Shock Absorber).
27. Bleed the brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding (Service and Repair).
28. Measure the wheel alignment. Adjust if necessary. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement (Wheel Alignment Measurement).
