Steering Wheel Replacement

J 1859-A - Steering Wheel Puller

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Steering Column in Lock Position Caution (Steering Column in Lock Position Caution).

1. LOCK the steering column and verify the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Service and Repair).
3. Remove the steering wheel module. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Replacement (Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Replacement).




4. Remove the steering wheel nut.
5. Put match marks (1) on the steering wheel assembly and on the steering main shaft.
6. Disconnect the connectors from the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) coil.

Caution: When removing the steering wheel, use only the specified steering wheel puller. Do not hammer on the end of the steering column shaft. Hammering could loosen the plastic injections which maintain the steering column rigidity.

7. Use the J 1859-A - puller in order to remove steering wheel.
8. If the vehicle has audio controls on the steering wheel, remove the steering wheel control switch assembly. Refer to Steering Wheel Control Switch Assembly Replacement (Service and Repair).




9. Remove the screw (2) from the right steering wheel spoke trim (1).




10. Disengage the 2 pins and remove the right steering wheel spoke trim (1).
11. If the vehicle has cruise control, remove the cruise control switch. Refer to Cruise Control Switch Replacement (Cruise Control Switch Replacement).




12. Remove the 2 screws (1, 2).




13. Disengage the 2 claws (1, 2) and remove the lower steering wheel spoke trim.




14. Remove the 2 steering wheel screws (1, 2).

Installation Procedure




1. Install the 2 steering wheel screws (1, 2).




2. Engage the 2 claws (1, 2) to install the lower steering wheel spoke trim.




3. Install the 2 screws (1, 2).
4. If the vehicle has cruise control, install the cruise control switch. Refer to Cruise Control Switch Replacement (Cruise Control Switch Replacement).
5. If the vehicle has audio controls on the steering wheel, install the steering wheel control switch assembly. Refer to Steering Wheel Control Switch Assembly Replacement (Service and Repair).




6. Engage the 2 pins to install the right steering wheel spoke trim (1).




7. Install the screw (2) to the right steering wheel spoke trim (1).
8. Verify the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
9. Center the SIR coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Centering (Procedures).




10. Align the match marks (1) on the steering wheel assembly and on the steering main shaft.
11. Install the steering wheel assembly.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

12. Install the steering wheel nut. Tighten the nut to 50 Nm(37 lb ft).
13. Connect the connectors to the SIR coil.
14. Install the steering wheel module. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Replacement (Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Replacement).
15. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Service and Repair).
