Remove/Install



Removal

- Jack up car.
- Disconnect ground cable at battery.
- Remove air cleaner.
- Loosen engine block vent hose at engine. pull off and plug opening at vent cover.









- Detach compressor (if equipped with air conditioning) at console and leave it connected to the hoses in the car.

CAUTION: The air conditioner system must he discharged if the compressor hoses are disconnected.





- Remove relay plate cover and disconnect engine wires at relay plate. at adapter plug. relay plate socket and ignition control unit.





- Unscrew fuel hoses at filter and return line.
- Disconnect accelerator linkage.
- Loosen rear tunnel cover screws and remove cover.
- Pull boot off of body and slide it forward over the selector rod.





- Loosen socket head at screw of shift rod coupling and pull coupling off of the transmission inner shift rod.
- Pull off wires of electronic speedometer sensor in tunnel and remove rubber plug with wire plug.
- Drain engine oil and plug oil hoses on engine and oil tank.





- Loosen heater hoses at heat exchangers, and pull off.
- Remove rear stabilizer.
- Loosen ground strap at body.
- Disconnect battery wires at starter.
- Disconnect accelerator linkage at operating lever.





- Disconnect clutch cable at transmission.





- Loosen drive shaft flange socket head screws at transmission.





- Place car jack with appropriate attachment underneath engine transmission assembly at center point of gravity and apply a little pressure

CAUTION: Be careful not to damage secondary air injection pipes.





- Loosen transmission carrier bolts.





- Loosen engine carrier bolts.





- Lower car jack with engine/transmission assembly carefully, and back it out.

CAUTION: If the car is moved with the engine/transmission unit removed, the drive shafts must he suspended horizontally to prevent damage to dust covers.

Installation

- Install in the reverse order of removal

CAUTION: Don't clamp the heater hoses. If necessary, slide them on the heat exchangers just before the engine/transmission assembly is in its final position.

- Torque specifications:
Engine and transmission carrier hex head screws: 9.0 mkg (65 ft lb)
Drive shaft/flange FILLISTER head capscrews: 8.2 mkg (60 ft lb)
