A new-type lower steering shaft with larger universal joints was introduced in production during the 1981 model year. Only the new-type shafts are now available as spare parts. To install new-type shafts on earlier cars, proceed as follows:
Lower steering shaft, installing

[Cars up to VIN No. 92 BN 42 0956(924) and VIN No. 93 BN 15 0783 (924 Turbo)].

- remove old steering shaft
- modify the sheet metal which surrounds the left front engine mount, using a long drift and hammering from inside the engine compartment.
^ depress sheet metal flange approx.8 mm (5/16 in.) over a length of approx. 50 mm (2.0 in.)
- touch up damaged paint on flange
- install new steering shaft (without tension) using new bolts, Part No. N 010 359 4, and selflocking nuts, Part No. N 022 146 4
^ torque: 30 - 35 N-m (22 - 25 ft.lbs.) check that there is adequate clearance of upper universal joint when turning steering wheel from lock to lock.
