Brake Pad: Service and Repair

1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Using a pair of suitable pliers, remove brake pad pin retainers.
3. Drive pad retaining pins out with a suitable drift and hammer.
4. For pads that are still serviceable, mark their original positions so that they may be reinstalled in original position.

5. Remove the pads using tool P86, Fig. 1.

6. Position pistons back in caliper using tool P83, Fig. 2. Brake fluid will be forced back into the reservoir. To prevent overflowing, siphon some fluid from reservoir.
7. Clean brake pad contact surface in their slots in the caliper. Do not use mineral solvents or sharp edged tools.
8. Check dust boots and clamping rings for damage and replace hard or porous boots.
9. Clean brake discs with fine emery cloth.
10. Install new brake pads in caliper slots together with retaining pins, springs, and pin retainers. Depress brake pedal several times before moving vehicle to properly position caliper pistons.
11. Check brake fluid level.
