Engine: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable in spare tire well.
2. Remove engine compartment cross brace. Vehicle must not be raised when brace is removed.
3. Position suitable vehicle hoist, but do not raise vehicle.
4. Disconnect windshield washer hoses and engine compartment wiring.
5. Disconnect top of engine hood supports.
6. Remove engine hood bolts and hood.
7. Remove cap from coolant expansion tank.
8. Remove air intake hoses and air cleaner assembly.
9. Raise and support vehicle.
10. Position piece of wood between central tube and rear tunnel brace.
11. Remove engine splash shield.
12. Remove drain plug from bottom of radiator and drain coolant.
13. Remove drain plug from left and right side of crankcase and drain coolant.
14. Drain engine oil.
15. Remove lower body brace from underside of vehicle.
16. Remove exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds.
17. Remove heat shields from left and right sides.
18. Disconnect body ground cable.
19. Install oil drain plug.
20. Install coolant drain plugs.
21. Remove clutch slave cylinder at clutch housing with hydraulic line connected.
22. Remove mounting strap for hydraulic line to slave cylinder.
23. Disconnect starter wiring.
24. Remove clutch housing cover and starter.
25. Press release lever downward to disconnect lever at ball pin.
26. Remove starter wiring clamps along steering crossmember.
27. Remove socket head bolts and slide clamping sleeve at driveshaft.
28. Remove release bearing mounting bolts and push sleeve toward clutch.
29. Remove left and right engine shock absorbers from control arms.
30. Remove left and right engine shock absorbers along with engine mounts.
31. On vehicles with A/C, proceed as follows:
a. Disconnect temperature switch wiring at radiator.
b. Disconnect compressor electrical connector on right drive belt cover.
c. Remove compressor from bracket, leave hoses connected.
32. Remove air pump filter housing.
33. Disconnect alternator cooling hose.
34. Remove lower fan shroud from radiator.
35. Disconnect coolant hoses from radiator.
36. Disconnect lower oil hose at radiator.
37. Position suitable jack under oil pan.
38. Position suitable wood block on lifting pad and raise engine slightly.
39. Remove one engine mount.
40. Lower engine onto front crossmember.
41. Remove second engine mount.
42. Lower vehicle and disconnect vent hose at T-adapter for radiator and thermostat housing.
43. Disconnect coolant hoses at thermostat housing.
44. Disconnect upper oil hose at radiator.
45. Using Allen head adapter, remove upper radiator mounting bolts and radiator.
46. Loosen hose clamp and remove hose between heater valve and neck.
47. Disconnect B + wire above ignition control unit.
48. Disconnect sensor wire between distributor and ignition control unit.
49. Disconnect engine wiring harness electrical connector.
50. Remove control unit.
51. Remove ignition coil and position aside.
52. Disconnect fuel feed and return lines below intake runners.
53. Disconnect hydraulic line at power steering pump.
54. Disconnect oil hoses at supply tank of power steering pump.
55. Drain oil and remove tank.
56. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose at manifold.
57. Remove throttle cable retaining screws, cable, and holder.
58. On vehicles with A/C, cover condenser with a suitable piece of plywood to prevent damage.
59. Install adapter 9137 or a suitable lifting device on engine.
60. Raise engine slightly.
61. Remove upper engine block/clutch housing mounting bolts.
62. Pull engine forward carefully and remove short driveshaft with guide tube.
63. Remove engine.
64. Reverse procedure to install.
