A windshield antenna has been standard equipment on 1985 and later model 928's. Interference suppression measures were also incorporated in these vehicles.

This windshield with an integral antenna can be installed in pre-1985 models providing proper interference suppression measures are followed, since these vehicles did not have the same level of suppression as later models.

This bulletin details the installation and suppression steps required to install a windshield with antenna in pre-1985 models.

Installation Procedures:

1. Remove windshield. Install new antenna windshield (refer to 928 Repair Manual Volume V page 64-3). Do not mount cowl panel cover and side ornamental strips at this time.

2. Remove glove box.

3. Remove air guide hose behind glove box.

4. Cut approx. 50 x 50 mm opening in insulation sheet on fire wall behind glove box in area of right instrument panel mount on the cross member.
5. Drill 14 mm hole in fire wall, approx. 20 mm below cross tube and 100 mm from right side panel.

6. Drill 18 mm hole in the cowl panel in the area of the right bottom windshield corner. Cover fender in area of rear edge. Because of the tight space, it is recommended to drill an 8 mm hole and then grind or file it to an 18 mm diameter.
7. Coat edges of holes with rust preventing paint.

8. Thread the antenna connecting lead from the outside through the hole in the cowl panel. Press a rubber grommet further in through the hole into the firewall with a screwdriver. Now insert the grommet from the inside. Press connecting adapter into hole of cowl panel.
9. Insert plug of windshield lead in adapter of connecting lead.

10. Make a bracket of steel or aluminum for installation of the antenna amplifier (see sketch on page 3).
11. Remove right instrument panel mounting screw in area of glove box opening. Mount fabricated bracket, long leg facing down. Mount antenna amplifier on bracket with a 5 x 15 hex. head screw, 5 mm nut, washer and spring washer. Good ground connection between amplifier, bracket and body is important.

12. Insert connecting plug in the antenna amplifier. Route power supply and HF lead from amplifier to radio.
13. Perform interference suppression measures (standard since 1985 models):
a) Install shielded spark plugs.
b) Install ground lead between ignition coil and engine block.

A ground lead should also be installed between the wiper motor and body.

Refer to Technical Bulletin Group 9 Number 8508 for information on other radio interference causes.

14. Reinstall air guide hose, glove box, ornamental strips and cowl panel cover.
