Brake Pad: Service and Repair

924S & 944 EXC. 944 Turbo

If brake pads are serviceable, pads must be marked for installation in original position.
1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2. Remove retaining pin spring locks, if equipped.
3. Drive out brake paid retaining pins with suitable hammer and drift.
4. Pull brake pad wear indicator warning contact out of pad plate, if equipped.

5. Remove inboard brake pad with tool P86 or equivalent, Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 Outboard Brake Pads Removal:

6. Using a suitable screwdriver, pry floating frame to full outboard position and remove outboard brake pad. Outboard brake pad is guided by a tab on the floating caliper frame, Fig. 3.
7. Replace oil contaminated, cracked or loose pads.
8. Press caliper pistons back into position. Ensure brake fluid reservoir does not overflow during step 8 by siphoning off any excess.
9. Clean pad seats and sliding surfaces in caliper. Do not use cleaning fluids containing mineral oils.

Fig. 4 Brake Piston Position Gauge:

10. Check that caliper piston is positioned at 20°, if necessary adjust with special pliers. When using a piston gauge, hold gauge at bottom guide surface of front caliper and top of rear brake caliper, Fig. 4.
11. Install outboard brake pad and press floating caliper frame toward brake disc so pin engages in groove of pad backplate.
12. Install inboard brake pad.
13. Install retaining pins and cross spring.
14. Press brake pad wear indicator warning contact into inner pad backplate, if equipped.
15. Install retaining pin spring locks, if equipped. Before moving vehicle, depress brake pedal several times to properly position caliper piston.

944 Turbo

If brake pads are going to be reused, mark pads for installation. Do not interchange brake pads from outboard to inboard or from one wheel to other.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Remove tire and wheel assembly.
4. Compress, then remove cross spring.
5. Disconnect wear indicator electrical connector, then pull indicator from brake pad backing plate.
6. Using a suitable tool, remove brake pads from caliper(s).
7. Replace worn and/or cracked brake pads, as necessary. Always replace all four brake pads on one axle side. Do not replace only one brake pad.
8. Using a suitable tool, push brake pad into position. In order to prevent brake fluid reservoir from overflowing. Siphon some brake fluid from reservoir.
9. Clean brake pad bearing and sliding surfaces in brake calipers with methylated spirits and a suitable brush. Never use solvents containing mineral oils, or sharp edged metal tools. Brake pad recess play should be .015-.023 inch (.4-.6 mm).
10. Check position of larger brake pistons in front fixed calipers. The edges of the shoulder on the piston must be parallel to the sliding surfaces of the brake lining. The shoulder (offset surface) must face the brake disc inlet.
