The connecting rods and con-rod nuts were changed in production in the following areas:

- manufactured through new methods and material change

- connecting rod nut contact surface ribbed (instead of smooth)

As of February 1984

Engine# 43 E 08808-manual 43 E 21103-auto.



1. Connecting Rods

- The weight has not been changed.

- The new version can be identified by the casting number on the con-rod big end and cap.



New: Cast steel connecting rod part # 944.103.001.01 (Casting No. on big end of con-rod)
Old: Sintered steel connecting rod, part # 944.103.001.00 (Casting No. on shank of con-rod, one side)



2. Connecting rod nuts

The contact surface of the nuts was changed to conform with the material change of the connecting rods.



New: Ribbed contact surface, part # 928.103.172.02
Old: Smooth contact surface, part # 928.103.172.01


A higher tightening torque is required for the new connecting rod nuts: 75 N-m (54 ft.lbs.)



Repair procedures:

- Old version connecting rods are still available.

- New version connecting rods can be installed together with old connecting rods.

- After depletion of old stock, only new version con-rod nuts will be available.

- As a guide, below is a cross reference table. Con-rod nuts must always be replaced, and not re-used.
Caution: The smooth connecting rod nuts cannot be used together with the new cast connecting rods (leads to engine damage)

Note: The new connecting rod nut is also standard in type 928S, since 9/84.
