1. When removing lubricating system components, refer to Fig. 4, noting the following:
a. When removing oil pan, be careful not to damage oil intake pipe.
b. When removing oil trap, intake distributor must be removed.
2. When disassembling oil pump, Fig. 5, on late 1985 and all 1986 models, use suitable tools to remove housing insert.
3. When assembling oil pump, note the following:
a. Install new shaft seal. Apply suitable lubricant to seal lip and install seal together with toothed sleeve and drive in using tool 10-203 or equivalent.
b. Torque countersunk screws to 6 ft.lbs.
c. Apply suitable sealant on outside diameter of housing insert.
d. Lubricate inner and outer rotors with suitable oil and ensure punch mark on outer rotor faces out.
e. Apply suitable sealant to face end of oil pump housing.
4. When installing lubricating system components, note the following:
a. When installing oil dipstick guide tube, use suitable sealant.
b. When installing new drain plug, use new seal ring and torque plug to 36 ft.lbs.
c. Coat threads of oil pan insert attaching bolts with suitable locking compound.
d. Before installing oil pan insert, open tabs and clean inside.
e. Coat oil drain pipe attaching bolt with suitable locking compound.
f. Torque oil intake pipe attaching bolts to 36 ft.lbs.
g. When installing camshaft drive gear, ensure belt collar faces balance shaft drive gear.
h. Replace housing plug seal and torque plug to 25 ft.lbs.
i. Replace oil pressure sensor O-ring seal and torque sensor to 25 ft.lbs.
j. Replace pressure relief valve plug seal and torque plug to 33 ft.lbs.
k. Check pressure relief valve piston for wear or signs of seizure, replacing as necessary.
l. When installing oil/water cooler, pre-assemble in housing and install together with crankcase upper section.

5. When installing oil pan, torque bolts in three steps in proper sequence, Fig. 6. Install bolts finger tight, torque to 3 ft.lbs. and torque to 6 ft.lbs.
6. When installing oil pump on late 1985 and all 1986-88 models, note the following:
a. Align oil pump body surface with upper crankcase section before tightening mounting bolts.
b. Apply toothed sleeve on sealing lip and seal simultaneously and drive in using tool 10-203 or equivalent.
c. Coat both sides of gasket in area of corners with sealant before installing oil pan gasket. New oil pump for late 1985 and all 1986-88 models cannot be installed in older engines.
