Evaporator Core: Service and Repair

Removing and Installing Evaporator

Removing

1. Discharge air conditioner

2. Remove knee guard and glove compartment.
3. Unscrew refrigerant lines at evaporator and insert plugs.

Note: A little refrigerant oil could be lost while unscrewing refrigerant lines.Be careful not to dirty inside of car with this oil.

4. Unscrew four bolts.

5. Lower evaporator and pull it back out of holder.
6. Make sure that water drain hose is connected when installing evaporator.

Disassembling and Assembling Notes:

Temperature sensor of the expansion valve measures the refrigerant temperature at outlet of evaporator. The opening in the expansion valve will be changed to agree with the measured temperature, so that the appropriate amount of refrigerant will flow through the evaporator for every operating condition. For this reason the sensor must have good metallic contact with the evaporator line.

"NO DRIP TAPE" must be carefully wrapped around the temperature sensot mounted on the evaporator line to insulate it against the ambient temperature.

Insufficient insulation of the temperature sensor could cause the expansion valve to meter excessive refrigerant,so that liquid refrigerant will still be at outlet of the evaporator and sucked in by the compressor. Since liquids cannot be compressed, this condition would cause damage to the compressor.
