Subject:
Additional TDC Mark on Flywheel

The flywheel received a second TDC mark, without the letters OT (TDC) -

As Of July 1983 Engine # 43D-814 for manual trans. 43E20243 for autom. trans.

Also see page 5 in the "Service Information, 1984 Models" booklet.

This second TDC mark was provided as additional help for adjustments and checking procedures, which have to be made from the bottom of the car. It is visible underneath the car and should point to ignition TDC of cylinder No. 1.

CAUTION! This mark is incorrectly positioned! All engines manufactured in the 1984 Model Year are included.

This additional mark must NOT be used for balance shaft or camshaft drive belt checking and adjustments.

The TDC mark, which is visible from above, must be used for these purposes. See page 28 in Group 13 of the Repair Manual 944, Volume 1.

Information for cars with automatic transmissions:

Since the flywheel has a locating mark for the damper installation position, the marks on the flywheel are divided as follows:

a. The drive plate has two marks - TDC for cyl. 1 and a mark for the damper location (without letters).

b. On the smaller dia. of the drive plate (near the engine block) is the incorrect positioned timing mark. (sometimes also marked with OT (TDC)).

Remarks:

The flywheels will be correctly marked probably as of Model Year 1985. The mark will then be recognized by an approximate 5 mm wide groove.
