To eliminate hydraulic noise when turning the steering against left or right lock, the oil return line was changed in the area of the steering gear.

As of Aug. 29, 1985, VIN 922GS860549

This new oil return line may be installed in older cars with this noise problem, beginning with MY 1983.

Repair Procedure for Older Cars

-Draw hydraulic fluid out of reservoir.

-Remove reservoir.

-Remove hose clamp with wire harness and pull to the side.

-Remove old return line.
-Install new return line
Note: Check the installed position on steering gear (see drawing).
-Torque hollow union bolt to 30 N-m or 21.6 ft.lbs.
Note: Do not use wire straps on the return line!

-Reinstall clamp with wire harness.

-Reinstall reservoir.

-Fill reservoir with hydraulic fluid and bleed steering (Shop Manual Volume 4, Group 48, pages 48-87).

-Check steering for leaks.

-Conversion Time: 120 TU
