Fuel Tank: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground connection.

Removing Fuel From Vehicle:





Note: Use E.P.A. approved fuel storage containers, and be sure to conform with local safety regulations when working on fuel systems.
2. Remove fuel from fuel tank.
3. Raise vehicle and remove rear muffler assembly.
4. Remove muffler heat shield mounted on fuel tank and rear suspension point.
5. Remove fuel pump cover.

Clamping Fuel Hose:





6. Use hose pinching clamp to pinch off the fuel feed line. Remove the hose clamp and electric plug. Remove hose from pump.
7. Unscrew the fuel filter fuel pipe from the fuel pump. Catch escaping fuel in appropriate container.
8. Remove right fuel tank strap.
9. Remove fuel pump and lower guard as a unit.
10. Remove transmission. Refer to "MANUAL TRANSMISSION/TRANSAXLE" for removal procedures.

Removing Fuel Filter And Carrier Assembly:





11. Unscrew fuel pipe from fuel filter. Remove transmission carrier and remove with fuel filter.

Fuel Sender Access:





12. Remove the trunk floor covering and remove the fuel sender access cover.
13. Remove the fuel return hose and disconnect the harness connector.
14. Remove right side rear window.

Fuel Filler Neck And Hoses:





15. Loosen and then carefully remove the right rear side trim panel.
16. Pull off the wheel house trim and insulation to expose the rear cover of the fuel filler neck.
17. Remove the cover.
18. Remove the vent hoses and loosen the fuel filler neck hose clamp.
19. Loosen left fuel tank strap and remove strap.
20. Remove fuel tank by pulling it towards the rear of the vehicle and down.

Correct Hose Routing:





21. Reinstall in reverse order of disassembly. Make sure that all fuel hose connections are tight and hose routing is correct before reinstalling fuel tank.
