Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Application and ID
O4:
System Description
The power transmission system of the 911 Carrera 4 consists of a fully synchronized, five speed manual transmission (1) with an integrated rear axle differential (2) as well as a transfer box (3) for permanent four wheel drive.
The connection to the front axle differential (2) is accomplished with the proven transaxle design consisting of a rigid supporting tube (5) and central shaft (6) running inside of tube (5). Exterior shift (7) is mounted on the central tube with connecting rod (7a).
DescriptIon of Components, Power Flow
Transmissions G5O/00 and G50/50 belong to a new family of transmissions developed for the range of six cylinder engine 911 models. The current version is the G64 for the 911 Carrera 4. Most of the components are identical in 911 Carrera, 911 Turbo and 911 Carrera 4 models.
The addition of four wheel drive is accomplished by adaptation of transfer box (3) in the front case of the transmission. This made it necessary to divide output shaft (1a) of the gearbox into a hollow shaft with pin on (1b) running on the inside. The transfer box is driven off of the hollow shaft.
Drive torque is divided here and put out to the rear axle (2) via pinion shaft (9) and to the front axle via central shaft (6).
