Shift Linkage: Service and Repair

Legend 2:
- Carefully ease cap with symbol (cover with gearshift diagram) out of shift-lever knob.
- Remove mounting screw from shift lever knob and remove knob (pull knob, do not turn).
- Remove center console and place to one side without disconnecting electrics. Console is held in place by 3 screws. Remove the center console panel to gain access to the 2 front screws.
- Remove shift-lever bracket complete with shift lever (A). To do so, select 4th gear (to gain space for removing) and remove the selector rod securing bolt (locating bolt) and the three shift-lever bracket securing bolts. Beforehand, remove bearing unit (B) as described below, if this step is necessary.
- To remove bearing unit (B), remove tunnel cover in front of rear seat and undo connection to selector rod (2 hex nuts).
- After removing the locating bolt, separate bearing unit from transmission.
Assembly
NOTE: Refer to Legends above for lubrication and torque instructions.
Shift Linkage:
- If bearing unit (B) has been removed, begin by installing shift-lever bracket with shift lever (A) in car.
- If bearing unit was not removed, check that the following parts are correctly seated after the shift- lever bracket has been positioned:
^ Circlip No. 16 of bearing pin
^ Slide ring No. 24 of selector rod
