Subject:
Modification of the Clutch Release Bearing and Release Bearing Arm

ATTENTION:
Service Manager/Service Technician

This bulletin replaces Technical Bulletin Group 3, Number 9401, dated 4-5-94.

Models Affected:
928 S4, 928 GT and 928 GTS, 1987-on

Concern:
Clutch chatter due to unfavorable tolerances.

General Information:
To improve clutch operation, the clutch release bearing area where the release bearing arm makes contact now has a crown (formerly flat) and the arm is now flat (previously crowned). See Figure A. The new release arm and bearing were installed in production as of October, 1993, from VIN:

92 5RS 820111

Repair Information:
The new parts (release bearing, arm and guide sleeve) must be installed as a set. This set applies to cars as of M.Y. 1987. A mixing of the three parts with the former versions is not permitted (see Figure A).

IMPORTANT:
For repairs to earlier cars from M.Y. 1987 to M.Y. 1993 up to VIN 92 4PS 820095, only the new release bearing and release arm are available. On first time repairs to earlier cars, where a customer complaint of clutch chatter is made, the new version guide sleeve, release bearing and arm must also be used. The outside diameter of the new guide sleeve is 31.8 mm (formerly 33.8 mm).

IMPORTANT:
DO NOT USE LUBRICATION on the sliding surfaces.

Installation:

Previously, there were two shims installed between the release bearing and the clutch pressure plate spring. With the new release bearing, only one shim is installed (see Figure B).
