Section B:Trunk Area
Figure D:
Use clear silicone sealant on light colored cars and black silicone sealant on dark colored cars (Dow Corning 732).
1. Concern: Water leaks to inside from high mounted stop light.
Correction: Use RTV sealer on mounting bolts and wiring grommet (Figure D). Wipe away excess sealer.
Figure E:
2. Concern: Water leak from hinge bolts and/or deck lid to body wiring harness (Figure E).
Corrections: Remove hinge bolts (arrow 1) one at a time and coat threads with RTV sealer. Reinstall and torque bolts securely.
Seal harness grommets and harness (arrow 2) at left front of deck lid with RTV sealer. Wipe away excess sealer.
Figure F:
3. Concern: Water leak from fuel filler neck area (Figure F).
Correction: Seal the following areas indicated by arrows with RTV sealer.
- Filler neck grommet (inner and outer diameter)
- Filler door mounting screws (qty. 2)
- Filler door rivet (qty. 1)
- Filler door rubber stop screws (qty. 2)
- Rubber flap screws (qty. 2)
- 6 mm mounting bolts (qty. 2)
Apply a filler bead of silicone to the inside edge of the filler flap opening. Smooth the bead with a wet finger and wipe away any excess sealer. From inside the trunk, check the drain hose for the filler neck area for restrictions and proper routing.
Figure H:
Figure I:
4. Concern: Water enters from mounting bolts for rear quarter applique panels.
Correction: From inside the trunk, seal the five main mounting bolts of the side appliques using sealing patches or flexible sealing putty (Figure H). Also seal the two upper corner mounting bolts (arrows, Figure I) from inside the trunk. Seal all rear applique mounting bolts using sealing patches or flexible sealing putty.
Figure J:
5. Concern: Water entering at trunk lock area (Figure J).
Correction: Pull off trunk lock grommet from outside and apply RTV sealer to the inner and outer diameter of the grommet. Reinstall grommet and wipe away any excess sealer.
Figure K:
6. Concern: Water leaking inside from rear tail lens housing seal to body.
Correction: To remove lens, heat the sealing area with a heat gun and slowly pull lens from body. Apply a small bead of flexible sealing putty (arrows, Figure K) at the upper and side edges of the body opening. Reseal the lens to the body using flexible sealing putty. Part Number AKD 522 009.
Figure L:
7. Concern: Water entry into trunk from areas around trunk seal flange.
Correction: With trunk seal removed, apply RTV sealer to the vertical weld seams at the front of the trunk opening (Figure L).
Figure M:
If necessary, trim the cloth edging of the side carpets. The edging should not extend more than approximately 3 mm over the outside of the trunk seal flange to prevent wicking action of water under the trunk seal (Figure M).
Ensure correct positioning of the inside seal lip of the trunk seal. If necessary, rework using a suitable plastic wedge. Afterward, apply RTV 732 into seal lip channel. Reinstall trunk seal with seal end joint positioned at rear center. (New endless seal installed from VIN 94 LN 481239.)
Figure N:
8. Deck Lid Adjustment
The gap between the front edge of the deck lid and the body should be approximately 5 mm. Maximum protrusion at the rear edge is 1.5 mm.
9. Concern: Possible water entry at front trunk corners.
Corrections: Apply flexible sealing putty to the underside of the front left and right trunk corners (arrow, Figure N).
