For model year 1989, a new coolant pump and thermostat are installed on 4 cylinder engines. The engine cooling thermostat is changed as follows (Figure 1):
Arrow 1 - the sealing ring is wider
Arrow 2 - the sealing and support of the thermostat has been changed by the installation of a supporting washer between the thermostat and retaining circlip.
This change occurred in production from the following engine numbers:
46 K 02784 944 Manual transmission
46 K 60012 944 Auto transmission
42 K 02630 944 S2
47 K 02571 944 Turbo
Parts Information:
PN 944 106 019 00 New thermostat with seal
PN 900 234 160 00 New supporting washer
PN 951 106 021 10 New type coolant pump (Turbo)
PN 944 106 021 24 New type coolant pump (944, 944 S2)
When existing stocks of former version coolant pumps (prior to model 89) are used up, only coolant pumps requiring the new type thermostat and supporting washer will be available.
Repair Information:
The addition of the supporting washer meant a change to the location of thermostat retaining ring groove (Figure 2). The groove is now positioned 7 mm from the thermostat sealing surface (was 4.5 mm).
When fully installed, the new type thermostat can have up to 0.6 mm axial play.
THE NEW TYPE THERMOSTAT WITH SUPPORTING WASHER CANNOT BE INSTALLED IN FORMER VERSION COOLANT PUMPS.
