Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
Removing
1. Remove final muffler.
2. Disconnect drive shafts from transmission end and take off flanges.
Note: Suspend drive shafts from car with pieces of wire in horizontal position to prevent damaging dust covers.
3. Detach support on rear transmission cover.
4. Disconnect selector lever cable and control pressure cable on levers and brackets. Pull cables forward out of suspension console.
Note: Cables are locked in ball sockets to prevent popping out.
5. Open inspection hole in rear bell housing and unscrew mounting bolts for torque converter (hold pulley if necessary).
6. Place universal transmission jack underneath transmission and secure retaining strap.
7. Unscrew transmission suspension/transmission member mounting bolts.
8. Remove right axle flange shaft and right transmission suspension.
9. Unscrew ATF lines on transmission case. Use an angled open-end wrench for coupling nut on transmission inlet.
10. Unscrew transmission case/transmission bell housing mounting bolts.
11. Lower transmission slightly and tilt back far enough so that torque converter can be secured to prevent falling out.
12. Lower transmission carefully on universal transmission jack.
Installing
1. Mount ATF hoses with new seals on the transmission case. Align transmission outlet hose by tightening hallow union bolt slightly and pushing hose forward until hose holder rests on cross rib of transmission. Then torque hallow union bolt to 22.5 NM (16 ft lb).
Note: Two seals must be installed between hose holder and adapter on transmission outlet.
Note: Mount ATF hose for transmission inlet with an inclination of 3° ± 3° (tightening torque: 30 Nm - 22 ft lb).
2. Mount rubber grommet between selector lever cable and suspension console.
3. Check adjustment of selector lever and control cables, correcting if necessary.
4. The rest of the installation is a reversal of the removal.
