Auxiliary Oil Cooler

Auxiliary Oil Cooler

General

Beginning with the 1969 models, vehicles have an auxiliary oil cooler located under the right front fender.

The additional cooling provided by this system ensures proper oil temperature when operating at high speeds or under heavy engine loads.

Description

Engine oil collects in the crankcase where it is picked up by an oil scavenger pump and returned to the oil tank. The oil then flows through an oil filter and a thermostat. If the temperature of the oil flowing from the crankcase rises above 83° C (183° F), a thermostat opens a passage to the front oil cooler where the oil flows through the cooler and returns to the oil tank. The cooled oil flows from the tank through a thermostat in the engine to the lubricating points. However, if the temperature of this cooled oil is still above 83° C (183° F), then the engine thermostat opens, forcing the oil to flow through the engine mounted oil cooler to continue lowering the temperature.
