Subject: Air Bag System Diagnosis


ATTENTION: Service Manager/Service Technician

This bulletin replaces Technical Bulletin Group 6, Number 9101, dated 2-8-91

Models Affected: 944 S2, model years '90 (L) and '91 (M)


Concern: Air bag warning lamp remains illuminated after starting engine or
comes on when pushing central locking switch. Possible fault code 60
- stored in air bag control.

Service Information: On all cars with air bag control unit Part Number 944 618 217 01, the 2-pin plug (arrow in Figure 1) should be disconnected when the vehicle is in the workshop for normal service or other repairs to avoid false warning light activation and fault display.


Important:

The 2-pin plug must be connected when performing air bag fault diagnosis or fault erasing. Disconnect 2-pin plug again after fault diagnosis.

Work Procedure: 1. Verify if control unit Part Number 944 618 217 01 is installed. (If not, no action necessary.)

2. Switch on ignition.
a. If air bag lamp goes out after 5 seconds, air bag system is ok. Disconnect 2-pin plug.

b. If air bag lamp does not go out after 5 seconds, read out fault memory. Repair fault. Erase fault memory. If fault code 60 is displayed, replace air bag control unit leaving the fault code 60 stored in the memory. Disconnect 2-pin plug.

Note: If control unit is replaced, record in the space provided in the Owner's Maintenance Booklet.


General Information: Air bag control unit Part Number 944 618 217 01 is installed from
production date: October 17,1990
VIN: 94 - MN 41 0402. 944 S2 Coupe
This control unit is installed in all '90 (L) and '91 (M) 944 S2 Cabriolets.

944 S2 Coupe air bag systems prior to the above VIN are diagnosed
as before, using the flashing warning lamp in the instrument cluster.
For additional information on this procedure, refer to Technical Bulletin
Group 6, Number 8707, Book D, page 211.

System tester 9288 or 9268 must be used to diagnose cars with
control unit Part Number 944 618 217 01.
