Models Affected:

Model Year 1992 and 1993 968's (NP)

Concern:

Squeaking noise from A/C belt after a cold start.

General Information:

On 968 vehicles with air conditioning, the poly-rib belt may squeak following a cold start. The noise may occur for up to two minutes after cold start.

Repair Information:

In the event of complaints, either of the following belts may be installed to rectify the squeak noise.

Repair Procedure: (Figure 1)

1. Belt replacement should be done on a cold engine (approximately 70° F).

2. Remove poly-rib belt and install either Dayco or Gates poly-rib belt.

3. When adjusting belt tension, the thickness of the belt must be taken into consideration. Using special tool 9201, set the tension of the poly-rib belt to the scale units shown in the chart below:

5. Operate the vehicle for 15 minutes or 15 miles and allow the engine to cool. Recheck belt tension and reinstall all covers.
