Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove rear muffler.
3. Disconnect driveshafts at transaxle and suspend from vehicle horizontally.
4. Disconnect electrical connectors at back-up light switch and speedometer drive.
5. Push back dust cover on shift rod and remove lock wire from bolt, then remove bolt.
6. Carefully press shift knob leather cover out of center console and push up.
7. Remove shift lever knob mounting clamp and the knob.
8. Remove circlip from shift lever.
9. Turn shift lever 180°, press down on insulation sheet and push shift rod forward into produced cavity by approximately 12 inches (300 mm).
10. Working through assembly openings, remove clamping sleeve screws, then push clamping sleeve toward transaxle.
11. Press in retainer with large screwdriver and push protective tube back through large opening in case far enough to clear central pipe housing.
12. Place wooden block between cross tube and central pipe to hold transaxle and central pipe in installed position.
13. Place suitable jack under transaxle and attach securely.
14. Remove transaxle suspension mounting bolts.
15. Remove transaxle to central pipe housing attaching bolts.
16. Remove transaxle toward rear of vehicle.
17. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. If shift rod protective tube retainers are excessively worn, replace tube.
b. Place shift rod protective tube in transaxle, torquing bolts as follows: M10 X 60, 31 ft. lbs.; M12 X 75 and M12 X 80, 62 ft. lbs.
c. Push shift rod protective tube forward until retainer engages in transaxle case.
d. Mount shift rod on intermediate lever and lock clamping bolt with steel wire.
e. On models with double point transaxle suspension, torque bolts as follows: transaxle mount to body, 34 ft. lbs.; mount to bracket and bracket transaxle, 18 ft. lbs.
f. On models with single point transaxle suspension, torque bolts as follows: transaxle carrier to body, 34 ft. lbs.; transaxle mount to carrier, bracket to transaxle mount and bracket to transaxle, 17 ft. lbs.
