Chain Tensioners


Chain tensioners can be replaced without removing engine if muffler and engine rear shrouding are removed.
1. Turn crankshaft to bring No. 1 piston to TDC.
2. Remove chain housing cover.
3. Remove chain tensioner retaining nut and take out tensioner.
4. When installing new chain tensioner, proceed as follows. Use only chain tensioner, part No. 93010505300, with spacer, part No. 93010551300.
a. Push tensioner assembly on shaft of sprocket wheel carrier until half of plunger shaft head is covered by the tensioner arm.
b. Turn lock ring until hold-down clamp can be removed.
c. Push chain tensioner fully on sprocket wheel carrier and secure.
5. When installing reconditioned chain tensioner, proceed as follows:
a. Compress tensioner assembly in suitable vise.
b. Slowly tighten vise until plunger is depressed, then hold piston in depressed position with tool P214 or equivalent.
c. Install tensioner and remove tool.
6. Torque chain tensioner retaining nut to 18 ft. lbs.
7. Check valve timing and adjust as necessary.
