M/T - Leather Shift Boot Damage

Model
6 Cyl.

Part Identifier
3405

Group
3

Number
9502

February 28, 1995

Subject:
Damaged Leather Shift Boot

ATTENTION: Service Manager / Service Technician

Model Affected:
911 Carrera 4 Model Year 1995

Concern:

When shifting into reverse gear, the leather shift boot may be pinched between the boot frame and the shift lever, damaging the shifter boot.

General Information:

To prevent this from occurring, a modified shift lever has been used since January 10, 1995 production, as of the following VIN numbers:

99 6 SS 32 3006 - Coupe
99 9 SS 34 2562 - Cabriolet

If a 1995 911 Carrera 4 produced before the above mentioned VIN numbers has a damaged leather shift boot, a new shift lever, part number 993 424 015 01, should be installed along with a new leather shift boot.

Repair Information:

1) Remove the old shift lever boot and shift lever. Install the new shift lever and a new shift lever boot.

2) Place the shift lever into the neutral position. The shift lever will automatically move to the 3rd - 4th gear shift gate. When adjusted correctly, the shift lever will be at a 90° (vertical) angle to the tunnel.

3) Operate the shifter through all gears. There must be equal free play to the front and rear of the console when each gear is fully engaged. If the freeplay is not equal, adjust the ball socket (a) on the shifter guide tube (b). One full turn of the ball socket is equal to 3 mm to 5 mm of shifter movement.

IMPORTANT:
The ball socket cups on both ends of the shifter guide tube must be aligned with each other to avoid binding of the shift lever and damage to the ball socket cups. Be certain to maintain this alignment when tightening the ball socket lock nut.
