911 Turbo Model Year 1996
Concern:
Some customers may comment of a slight vibration in the vehicle at speeds between 110 mph and 125 mph*. This may be due to incorrect centering of the inner CV joints to the front axle drive flanges.
* Porsche recommends obeying all traffic laws.
General Information:
As of the below-mentioned VIN's, the front differential front drive shafts and axle flanges are self centering. Should replacement of the front drive shaft(s) or axle flange become necessary, only the new self centering style should be used.
New self centering front drive shaft and axle flange installed as of VIN's:
99 1SS 323978
99 3SS 343514
99 0TS 375338
Identification Information:
The new self centering CV joint and axle flange can be identified by a centering lip on the CV joint cap (# 2 arrow) and a recess in the drive flange (# 4 arrow) as shown in the illustration.
The former style CV joint and axle flange has a rounder profile than the self centering version and can be identified by the illustration above.
Repair Information:
If any of the components that make up the front drive shaft need to be replaced, the new version self centering CV joint cover and drive flange must be used.
The new CV joint cover and new axle flange can be used with the old front drive shaft. It is not necessary to replace the complete front drive shaft unless, the outer CV joint or axle shaft is damaged.
The new self centering front drive shaft must only be coupled with the new self centering axle flange.
