Subject:
Locking Airbag Control Unit

ATTENTION: Service Manager / Service Technician

Models Affected:

911 Carrera, Model Year 1995

Concern:

With the introduction of the new 911 Carrera, a new airbag control unit was installed, Part Number 993 618 217 00.

If this airbag control unit is replaced, it must be "locked" after installation using the system tester 9288. If this is not done, the airbag control light will blink and the airbag system will have only limited function.

Repair Information:

The locking of the control unit is being done with the system tester 9288, module version 5.0.

Procedure:

Connect the system tester 9288 and access the airbag system.

Select the lock function and go through until the display shows "locking."

Display: "Airbag locking?

1 = Yes
2 = No"

Then push button 1.

If no problem is recorded, after a short period of time the display will show:

"Airbag is locked
back: N"

With this, the airbag control unit is locked.

NOTE:
The first few control units were shipped already locked. If the above procedure is used on those units, the display in the system tester 9288 will show:

"Airbag already locked
back: N"

All control units which are now shipped from the Parts Department are not locked and the above mentioned procedure must be followed.
