Front Wheel Bearing (Part 2 Of 2):
NOTE:
- During service procedures, refer to the illustration above and the information below.
- Observe correct combination when replacing wheel hub and/or the spring washer - in the case of '94 (R) model vehicles. Observe the "Technical Information" - Group 4, No. 2/94 - for this purpose.
Preliminary work
- Undo the screw connection between wheel hub and wheel bearing or the drive shaft fastening (in the case of all-wheel drive vehicles) before lifting the vehicle or removing the wheel bearing housing (wheel carrier).
- Remove wheel carrier, brake disc and speed sensor.
Removal
- Press out rear-wheel hub with pressure piece P 297 A (tool A).
Use the separator (tool B) for support.
If there is not enough space for the wheel hub between the press, appropriate shims will additionally be necessary.
- Remove brake disc cover and lid for the wheel bearing (four screws).
- Heat wheel bearing housing to approx. 100°C (max. 120°C).
Press out wheel bearing with tubular piece VW 415A (tool Q using the appropriate shims.
- Press inner wheel bearing race off the wheel hub.
To do this, use pressure piece P 297a (tool A) in combination with the separator (tool B).
NOTE:
- First pull the inner bearing race several millimeters off the wheel hub so that the separator can be put into place.
- For this purpose, use a two-claw puller in combination with a suitable pressure piece.
Installation
- Before installation, clean the bore in the wheel bearing housing and remove any surface irregularities with a polishing cloth.
- Heat wheel bearing housing to approx. 100°C (max. 120°C).
Fit new wheel bearing and subsequently press again slightly, using appropriate shims.
NOTE: The wheel bearing is damaged when the wheel hub is removed, and must be replaced.
- Fit retainer plate.
Unless there is a water drain on both sides, fit the water drain (groove) in the correct position - i.e. facing downward.
Tighten screws to: 37 Nm (27 ft lb).
- Fit brake disc cover.
- Press in wheel hub.
For this purpose, position wheel centering surface of the wheel hub on the pressure piece 9247/3 (tool D).
In order to provide sufficient distance between the wheel bolts and press, additionally use a suitable tubular piece (X) - for example, VW 459/2.
Press against inner race of wheel bearing with tubular piece VW 415 A (tool C).
- Replace fastening nut on the wheel hub-wheel bearing screw connection. Tighten fastening nut to: 460 Nm (340 ft lb).
NOTE:
- Observe correct combination when replacing wheel hub and/or the spring washer - in the case of '94 (R) model vehicles.
- Observe the "Technical Information" - Group 4, No. 2/94 - for this purpose.
