Disconnect battery
Loosen the fastening screws (figure 1) on the steering wheel that retain the airbag (Torx T30).
NOTE:
Self locking screws must not be reused. The new steering wheel comes equipped with new screws.
Pull out the plug connection (figure 2) and lay the airbag unit aside.
NOTE:
Always store the airbag with the padded side facing up.
Remove (figure 3) the steering wheel (make sure the front wheels are straight ahead and mark the position of the steering wheel). Remove the steering column switch cover and the contact reel.
The wires and plug connections of the contact unit are tie-wrapped at the right hand side of the steering column. The tie-wrap must be cut before the plugs can be disconnected. For this reason you must loosen the steering column switch unit (figure 4) and pull0 it off the steering shaft.
Pull out the plug connections and disconnect. Remove the contact unit.
The new contact unit is equipped (figure 5) with 2 additional wiring connectors. Plug the 2 existing orange connectors together. Plug the new additional wiring harness into the additional connector on the contact reel. The connectors are color coded to prevent wrong connection. Wrap each connection with tape. This is done to help prevent noise.
Push the additional wiring harness (figure 6) and connector to the right of the steering column. Reinstall the steering column switch and cover.
Align the steering column switch unit and adjust the switch assembly to measurement of 54 mm +/- 0.5 mm. Tighten the switch cover.
Install the contact reel and adjust the reel (figure 7) as per the instructions on the top of the contact reel. The wheels must be straight ahead for this.
Install the new steering wheel (figure 8).
IMPORTANT:
Do not pinch the wires of the contact reel.
- Tighten the steering wheel nut and spring washer to 45 Nm.
- Plug in wires. (red/yellow without connector has no function)
- Install the airbag and tighten bolts to 10 Nm.
Remove the switch plate from the center console (figure 9).
- Remove the access plate from the right side of the console.
- Disconnect the plug for the selector lever switch.
- Route the additional wiring harness that was installed earlier along side the main wiring harness. Bring it out with the selector lever wiring connector on the right side of the console.
Disassemble the disconnected connector (Figure 10) half and remove pin 1 (brown/red wire) and pin 2 (brown/yellow wire).
- Solder the wires of the additional wiring hamess onto the wires of selector switch with the same color.
- Replace pins 1 and 2 of the connector.
- Reassemble the connector and plug the connector halves together.
- Fasten the additional wiring harness to the main harness with tie-wraps. Make sure the additional wiring harness does not interfere with any pedal operation.
- Install the switch plate and access plate of the center console.
- Connect the battery.
- Check airbag system with the system tester.
- Test drive the car.
NOTE:
The steering wheel shifting is only operational with the shifter in the manual gate.
