Subject:
Cabriolet Top Clearance

ATTENTION: Service Manager / Service Technician

Models Affected:

911 Carrera - Model Year 1996

Concern:

Insufficient Cabriolet top clearance at the rear seat or rear body wall this may lead to:

- Damage to the rear window.

- Loosening of rear window adhesive (figure 1 - Arrow A).

- Chafing on the top material in the area of the folding bow (arrows B) and main bow (arrow C).

- Tearing of top material approximately 50 mm above the rear window, next to the seam (arrows D).

General Information:

Due to tolerance stack on vehicles produced prior to October 1994, it is possible with the top open, the clearance between the top and rear seat body wall area may be insufficient. This could create any combination of the above mentioned types of damage.

However, the damages can also occur if items are left behind the rear seat backs (umbrella, boxes, paper. etc.) and interfere with the top.

Figure 6 in this bulletin shows the areas of concern.

Checking for proper clearance:

- Remove the rear seat back cover (two phillips screws) and both rear seat backs (3 - 8 mm locking nuts each seat) figure 2. Seat backs are not illustrated.

With the cabriolet top in the open position, the clearance is correct if the fingers of a hand can be moved between the cabriolet top and rear body wall cover (figure 3).

Repairs:

1) Close the cabriolet top and remove the seat belt cover and back wall lining (figure 4 and 5). Remove the rear seat belt cover, (4 screws and 1 - 4 mm locking nut). It is only necessary to slide the cover forward, it does not have to be removed completely. To remove the back wall lining. undo the fastener at the center of the lining (arrow figure 4). Move the lining upward out of its brackets. Slightly fold the back wall lining and remove to the right or left of the seat belt mounting.

2) Modify insulation material by cutting out the area (marked darker) with a knife, (figure 6 - darker areas).

3) With a piece of wood or plastic, rework the rear body wall, (figure 7). Figure 8 shows the possible areas where the tight spots might be.

Important
Make sure that there are no hoses or wires being pinched in the engine compartment from this procedure.

4) With the back wall lining removed and laid out flat, pull back the carpet at the radiused area marked A (figure 6). Trim 5 mm to 8 mm of the compressed board from this area and reinstall the carpet.

5) Reinstall the rear body wall cover by slipping it from the top into the brackets and secure with fastener.

6) Open the Cabrio top and check the clearance, if the clearance is not enough, repeat the procedures 1 thru 8 again.
