Timing Belt: Adjustments

1. Remove air guide hoses.
2. Remove upper air guide section from above.
3. Remove distributor caps and the upper righthand timing belt cover.
4. Detach upper lefthand timing belt cover and push forward.
5. Turn engine in direction of rotation to TDC (cylinder No. 1), ensuring marks on camshaft and flange bearings are aligned.
6. Turn engine 720° until TDC mark is reached again, then continue turning while checking timing belt for wear and/or damage.
7. Prepare tool 9201, or equivalent, for checking by pulling out lockpin and moving testing pin opposite lockpin to starting position, then place drag needle on gage needle.
8. Slide tool on relaxed section of drive belt with sliding shoes on smooth surface and rollers in tooth gap.
9. Slowly press down on tool case until gage button resting on air pump bracket engages.
10. Read test value while keeping tool horizontal to timing belt, ensuring tool does not rest on plastic cover. Sliding shoes must rest on belt with their complete surface. Tool must not be turned or moved on belt while checking. The drag needle must always be placed on the gage needle after the lockpin has been engaged to eliminate faulty gauge readings. Turn counterclockwise.
11. Pull out lockpin to disengage gage tip. Repeat test two or three times.

12. If adjusting value is not 4.7-5.3, adjust as follows:
a. Loosen adjusting screw locknut and turn adjusting screw until timing belt tightness is correct. Adjusting screw is located on bottom of engine at front righthand side, Fig. 2. Tightening screw tightens belt and loosening screw loosens belt.
b. Tighten locknut, then turn engine 720° and recheck tightness of belt.
