Subject:
Coding ECM (DME) for 911 Carrera with Tiptronic Transmission
ATTENTION:
Service Manager / Service Technician
Models Affected:
911 Carrera Model Year 1996
Concern:
As of Model Year 1996, the spare parts ECM (DME), part number 993 618 604 00, is coded for manual transmission vehicles. If this control unit is installed in a vehicle with Tiptronic transmission, the ECM must be recoded accordingly. If the ECM is installed in a vehicle with Tiptronic transmission and not coded to a Tiptronic vehicle, the MIL will illuminate.
Coding of the ECM (DME) to a Tiptronic vehicle is a one time option. ONCE THE ECM HAS BEEN CODED TO WORK IN A TIPTRONIC VEHICLE, IT CAN NOT BE RE-CODED TO WORK IN A MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLE. Please keep this in mind when swapping ECM's from other vehicles for test purposes.
It is not necessary to code the spare parts ECM for manual transmission vehicles.
Coding:
Coding of the ECM (DME) is done by the system tester 9288 in the following manner:
- Connect system tester 9288 to the vehicle.
- Select vehicle type "911", then select "DME".
- Select "Actual Values" from the menu, then page forward until the screen with coding is displayed and select "coding".
- The system tester will display one of the following screens depending on the type of transmission installed in the vehicle.
- Once one of the above screens has been displayed, the coding is done automatically by the system tester without any action by the technician.
- Exit from the system and remove the tester from the vehicle.
