Concern:

As of May, 1996, a new air bag control unit, part number 993 618 217 01 with additional software was installed in production. The new air bag control unit recognizes additional safety equipment such as: seat belt lock, passenger seat occupied, child seat occupied and seat belt tensioners. These items are not active in the above-mentioned vehicles as the wiring for them is not installed.

General Information:

The new air bag control unit can be identified using the system tester 9288 with version module 8.0 installed. The software version identification is "B03AIRBAG".

All new spare parts air bag control units, part number 993 618 217 01 have the function "PASSENGER SEAT ACTIVE" activated. This function needs to be deactivated as the wiring for this is not installed. If the air bag control unit is installed with this function active an air bag fault will be set. Should this happen the following procedure must be taken.

Deactivation:

- Connect system tester 9288 and select "AIRBAG". The above will be displayed.

- Press the right arrow button. The above will be displayed.

- Press the right arrow button again. The above will display. Select number 2.

- Select number 2. The above will be displayed.

- Select number 3 seat allocation.

- Select number 2. The asterisk moves to number 2 "Not Active". Press return on the key pad until you reach the air bag menu.

- Select Fault memory. Erase any stored fault codes and lock the control unit. Remove the system tester and run the car to be sure no other faults exist.
