Removing Roof Liner
1 - Convertible top in service position
- Unlock convertible top and raise convertible-top compartment lid to its top position. Disengage the strip on the cloth covering in downward direction. Press the ball socket of the left and right tension cables out of the ball head of the adjusting piece. Fold tension cable upwards at the main bow until it engages.
2 - Detaching roof liner connection to tension bow
- Use a plastic spatula to press the plastic clips for roof liner connection out of the tension bow on the left and right.
3 - Opening the Velcro fastening on the push bar
- Open the Velcro fastening on the push bar.
4 - Disengaging tension hook on main bow
- Disengage the tension hook from the pin of the convertible-top support/main bow.
5 - Pressing out plastic clip on roof frame
- Carefully press out plastic clip on roof frame at the sides using a plastic spatula.
6 - Detaching roof frame front connection
- Pull the roof liner connection (plastic U-rail) at the front of the roof frame to the rear.
7 - Pulling out tightening strips of main bow and centre cover moulding
NOTE: Push convertible-top button in closed direction until the convertible-top compartment lid is in half-closed position.
- Pull out tightening strips of main bow and centre cover moulding simultaneously.
8 - Vehicles with riveted roof liner clamping strips on the roof frame
NOTE: In 20 vehicles, the headliner clamping strip was riveted to the roof frame. These vehicles are identified by the Vehicle Identification Numbers 98 ZY S 64 0086 to 98 ZY S 64 109.
Observe the following roof liner removal procedure:
1. Detach the convertible top covering -inset A- at the front and sides of the roof frame and fold to the rear.

2. Drill out the four rivets connecting the roof liner clamping strip to the roof frame -inset B- using a dia. 4 mm drill bit.
3. Pull the roof liner clamping strip rearward out of the roof frame.
4. Fit convertible-top covering on the roof frame

5. Install new roof liner.

Installing Roof Liner
1 - Pulling in tightening strips on main bow and on centre cover moulding
NOTE: Push convertible-top button in closed direction until the convertible-top compartment lid is in half-closed position.
- Pull both tightening strips of the roof liner into the groove on the main bow and centre cover moulding by approx. 30 mm. Pull in bath tightening strips simultaneously.
2 - Fitting roof frame connection at front
- Press the roof liner connection (plastic U-rail) into the front of the roof frame.
3 - Pressing in the plastic clip at sides of roof frame
- Press in the plastic clip at the sides of the roof frame.
4 - Engaging tension hook on main bow
- Use the assembly tool to engage the tension hook into the pin of the convertible-top support/main bow.
5 - Closing the Velcro fastening of the push bar
- Close the Velcro fastening of the push bar.
A = up to production date 12.04.2000
B = as from production date 13.04.2000
6 - Fitting roof liner connection on tension bow
NOTE: In vehicles with a roof liner produced before 12.04.2000, a new roof liner with a new cut must be installed when the convertible-top covering with a small rear window is replaced. Conversion measure on the tension bow for the roof liner
- Position the root liner connection and cloth covering on the tension bow. Secure the connection by pressing in the plastic clips into the tension bow on the left and right.
7 - Ending service position
- End service position and press the ball socket of the tension cable into the ball head of the adjusting element on the left and right. Engage the strip on the cloth covering in the rear wall of the convertible-top compartment lid.
