Rattle from Hardtop

Vehicle Type: Boxster, with Hardtop (M55O)

Model Year: As of 1997 (V)

Concern:
Rattling noises from the hardtop, where the hardtop centering pins engage the windshield frame.

Information:
A modified cap for the hardtop centering pins was introduced into production as of October 13, 1997, VIN: 98 6 WS 62 0928, and 98 1 WU 62 0470. This cap is designed to eliminate the possibility of rattles from the left and right centering pins of the hardtop (at the windshield frame). There are two ribs, one top and one bottom, which protrude from this new cap to prevent rattling.

Parts Information:
986 563 625 02 New/Cap (with protruding ribs)
986 563 625 O1 Former cap, no longer used

Repairs:
When addressing customer concerns of rattling at the front hardtop mounting points, (on VIN's prior to the above) install the new caps on both hardtop centering pins:

- Clean the hardtop

- Remove the hardtop (refer to the Boxster Technical Manual, Group 6, page 61-43.)

- Using a suitable pair of pliers, remove the two caps from the front centering pins. It may be necessary to damage the old caps to remove them.

- Remove any remaining adhesive from the centering pins, and ensure the pins are free of grease.

- Apply a thin coat of a commercially available adhesive (e.g. 3M, Super Glue, Loctite, etc.) to the inside of the new caps and to the centering pins. Install the new caps onto the centering pins.

- Remove residual adhesive and reinstall the hardtop.
