Porsche Child Restraint System - Installation

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (993)

Model Year:
As of 1997 (V) - 98 (W)

Concern:
Retrofitting passenger side airbag deactivation device (crossbar with belt lock) to complete the Porsche Child Restraint system

Information:
Whenever a Porsche Child Seat is installed in the passenger seat, the passenger side airbag MUST be deactivated to prevent possible injury to a child in a child seat during a collision. A Porsche passenger airbag deactivation device (cross-bar with belt lock) specially designed for the Porsche Child Seat must be installed in the vehicle, and must be enabled with the Porsche System Tester 2 (PST2) before using the Porsche Child Seat.

After the deactivation device (crossbar with belt lock) has been installed and enabled, the passenger side airbag is deactivated by inserting the belt tongue from the child seat into the belt lock (receptacle) on the cross-bar. Deactivation is acknowledged by the airbag light flashing for 10 seconds when the vehicle is first started or ignition is turned on.

Note:
The passenger side airbag is returned to a normal (activated) state when the child seat tongue is removed from the belt lock receptacle.

Warning!
Advise the customer that when using the Porsche child seat, if the passenger side airbag deactivation cannot be acknowledged by a flashing airbag light upon vehicle startup, or if the airbag light remains continuously lit (fault present), a child SHOULD NOT be placed in the child restraint system! The vehicle should be immediately brought to an authorized Porsche dealer for repair!

Parts Information:

Qty. 1 - 993 803 083 01 * Kit, Crossbar with buckle receptacle and lock
Includes: 2 each M8 x 30 pan head bolts

* This kit is not available separately, it is part of the Child Seat kit.

Tools Required:

Porsche System Tester 2 (PST2)

Torque wrench

Socket for hexagon pan head bolts

1. Move the passenger seat to it's rearmost position. Remove the front seat rail cover and take out the floor mat. Remove the two front seat rail bolts (M8 x 20).

2. Assemble the seat belt buckle with wire lead to the crossbar. (Figure 2)

2.1 Locate the two wire connector on the mounting plate (Figure 3). Remove connector from the mounting plate and the adhesive tape. Connect the crossbar buckle lead to this connector and re-attach to the mounting plate.

2.2 Insert the ends of the crossbar into the seat rails. When properly installed, the crossbar is angled downward toward the floor (Figure 4).

2.3 Fasten the crossbar and seat with the new pan head bolts (M8 x 30) included in the parts kit. Tighten the bolts to 23 Nm (17 ft lbs).

Note:
If the vehicle is equipped with a phone, ensure the seat rail stop (Figure 4) is reinstalled between the bolt head and the crossbar. This limits forward travel of the seat.

Activation (enabling) of Child Seat Occupancy

3. Connect the Porsche System Tester 2 (PST2) to the diagnostic socket (Figure 5) and switch on the ignition.

3.1 Switch on the tester and select vehicle type "911". Begin the control module search.

3.2 After the control module search is complete, select the menu point "Air Bag".

3.3 From the "Air Bag" menu, select "Identification". Verify the airbag control unit part number (per parts microfiche), and determine that the software version is B04 or later. Afterward, return to the air bag main menu.

3.4 From the air bag menu select "Modify Coding".

3.5 Select "Child Seat Occupancy" and change from "Not Active" to "Active". Confirm by pressing F8.

3.6 Switch off the ignition. After a 4 second pause, switch on the ignition again and press the [>>] key on the PST2 tester. Communication with the airbag control unit will then be reestablished.

3.7 Select "Read Out Fault Memory". After the fault memory is read out, return to the air bag menu and select "Erase Fault Memory". Note: faults may have been stored during the deactivation crossbar installation process.

3.8 Check that the fault memory has been successfully erased by reading out the fault memory again. If necessary, repeat steps 3.6 and 3.7. Important: Ensure no faults have recurred. If any faults do recur, repair as necessary.

3.9 Switch off the PST2 tester and disconnect from the diagnostic socket. Switch off the ignition.

Function Check

4. Place the Porsche child seat in the passenger seat. Connect the Porsche seat belt tongue into the crossbar buckle and switch on the ignition.

4.1 With the belt inserted into the crossbar buckle and the ignition switched on, the air bag control unit performs a self test. With the Porsche child seat in place, the air bag warning light should flash at 1 Hz intervals for approximately 10 seconds. This indicates system readiness and deactivation acknowledgment.

4.2 If the cross bar with seat belt buckle is no longer desired and is removed, the air bag control unit must be recoded to "Child Seat Occupancy" "Not Active" status with the PST2 tester.
