Air Bag Control Unit

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (993), 911 Turbo (993)

Model Year:
As of 1995 (S)

Concern:
Airbag control unit replacement

Information:
The airbag control unit for the 911 Carrera (993) and 911 Turbo (993) has been superseded to a new version, part number: 996 618 217 01. All prior versions are no longer available.

The new version control unit (996 618 217 01) CANNOT be recognized by the former 9288 scan tool. Therefore it is necessary to use the Porsche System Tester 2 (PST2) when locking or diagnosing the new type airbag control unit.

When connecting the PST2 to 1995 vehicles (without an OBD II diagnostic connector), it will be necessary to use special adapter lead 9288/1 to adapt the 9288 (round plug type) cable to the PST2. This special adapter lead was included in the initial tool shipment of the PST2.

To connect the PST2 to 1995 models:

- Connect the metal end of the 9288/1 adapter lead to the diagnostic card of the PST2.

- Connect the former 9288 cable to the male end of the 9288/1 adapter lead. The PST2 can now be connected to the vehicle.

Locking:

Lock the 996 618 217 01 airbag control unit on the 911 Carrera (993) as follows:

- Connect the PST2 to the vehicle (see above). Turn ignition on. Turn PST2 on.

- Under "Vehicle type" select "911". Perform a scan of all control units using the >> key.

- Select "Airbag", then menu item "Lock". Press the >> key.

- Vehicle type 911 Carrera (993) should appear. Press the key again.

- 911 Carrera (993) should be highlighted. Press F7 (yes) to proceed. (Or F8 to abort)

- When "Input Vehicle Identification Number" appears, enter the VIN. When the VIN is correct, press >> and then F7 (yes) to confirm.

- The control unit can now be locked by pressing: F8 (lock).

General Notes:
Airbag control units are supplied from the Parts Department in an unlocked state. If a newly installed airbag control unit is unlocked, the airbag warning light will flash until it is locked. A flashing airbag warning light is NOT an indication a faulty condition with the airbag control unit!

Once locked, the airbag control unit cannot be unlocked! Therefore, the proper vehicle type must be confirmed before locking. After locking, it cannot be changed.

In the event of a fault, the airbag control unit cannot be locked. The following messages may be displayed in the fault memory as a condition or a fault:

- Airbag was already locked

- Not a Porsche control unit

- Wrong vehicle type

- Wrong data version

- Wrong equipment

Note:
If "Wrong equipment" is displayed, correct the equipment under "Modify coding". The modifying of coding is not normally necessary when installing a new airbag control unit.
